Swine Flu and Your Estate Plan

The Swine Flu pandemic is a good motivator for you to think about you your estate plans and make sure everything is in order. If you’ve got an estate plan, you’d better get it out now and make sure it’s in tip top shape. If you haven’t got an estate plan put together yet, now is the time to get started. Four legal tools form the basis of every good estate plan.

Attorneys aren’t going to give you a lot of guarantees, but I’ll give you a guarantee, and I’m an attorney. If you make sure your estate plan is in place, it will be worth every effort you make and every dime you spend just for the peace of mind it will give you. A top notch estate plan is going to give your family a ton more money when all is said and done. No, I am not saying you are going to die because of the swine flu pandemic, but I am saying you will die some day, and you need your legal foundation in place before then. The swine flu buzz is just a reminder that you need to think about your mortality and how you are going to take care of your loved ones after you die.

You need the following four legal tools.

1. A standard will
2. An inter vivos trust (living trust)
3. A durable power of attorney
4. A personal living will
